Explore nature and discover what’s in your own backyard to grow (or simply start) your carving skills on this 2 day workshop with a difference at Woonona’s relaxing Illawarra Woodwork School.

Let respected spoon carver and bush regenerator Brad van Luyt introduce you to the wonderful world of spoon carving with Woody Weeds from Greenwood at a local creek.

This is your chance to find out why this methodical, meditative and creative craft is going through a world wide renaissance plus learn about the local environment and how we can access this natural resource that’s at our fingertips.

No woodwork or carving experience needed, and all tools and materials are provided plus a delicious afternoon tea and light local exploration of the local environment on this weekend workshop like no other.

All that is required is an open mind to the possibilities of working with wood to create cutlery such as a butterknife, spatula and spoon, with each utensil increasing your skills and techniques whilst connecting with other woodlovers in the area and learning from one of the most respected teachers in Australia.

Presented by one of Australia’s most popular spooncarver’s Carol Russell, whose spoon and small objects workshops sell out across the country and the world. [Check out carolrussellwoodwork.com.au.]

Over two delightful days of wood-loving bliss, Carol will take you through her processes for making spoons from seasoned timber.

The Weekend Workshop will cover:

– Timber Selection and Design: How do you bring your own style to the craft?

– Tool Selection, Maintenance and Sharpening

– Carving and Whittling Techniques

– Carving Detail into Spoon Handles

– Creative Finishing Techniques

As well as clean, unmarked timber, we’ll also look at using natural elements in the wood such as bark, knots and weathered surfaces along with driftwood.
